Finesse, Delicacy, Balance and Longevity

One of Germany’s most famous wine producers from arguably its most admired wine region. Johann Josef Prüm founded the family estate in 1911 but the wine’s unique style and reputation was said to have been established by his son Sebastian in the ‘30s and ‘40s. Sebastian’s son Manfred Prüm and his daughter Dr Katharina Prüm are now at the helm and they’re still producing some of the world’s most valued and loved Rieslings.

The vineyards track the incredibly steep slopes carved by the Mosel River, on what are considered to be the best sites in Mittelmosel. They wind around the villages of Zeltingen-Rachtig, Whelen, Graach, and Bernkastel, and the soils vary across them but are united by a common thread of Devonian slate - a significant contributor to the racy acidity and minerality Prüm wines are known for. The vines are always harvested late and by hand, and only fruit of the highest quality finds its way to the winery.
Simplicity is key in the winemaking as well, leaning on traditional techniques and only using indigenous wild yeasts for fermentation. J.J. is known for minimal handling of young wines to preserve their delicacy and freshness. This is referred to as reductive winemaking - basically where oxidation accelerates the aging process, reduction puts the brakes on. It leaves the wines with a slightly ‘struck match’ aroma when they’re consumed young, but it’s the reason they’re capable of such longevity. The wine is also exclusively vinified in stainless steel to preserve the purity of the fruit.
